Biography

Richard Birchall is a versatile figure who has been active as a cellist, composer, orchestrator, and arranger. Birchall has performed as an orchestral player with the Philharmonia Orchestra, rising to the position of third-chair cellist. He is the concertmaster of the London Cello Orchestra, the cellist of the Minerva Piano Trio, and co-founded the cello octet Cellophony. With Cellophony, he recorded the album Vibrez in 2014. The Tippett Quartet recorded his arrangement of Bernard Herrmann's Psycho Suite on the Signum Classics label. In 2022, Birchall's Clarinet Concerto, written for clarinetist Michael Collins, was performed by Collins with the Philharmonia Orchestra in a recording on the BIS label.
