Giovanni Bassano

Although both a composer and cornett player, Giovanni is most appreciated historically for his contribution in the writing of instruction manuels for decorated motets. He would ornament one part of a counterpoint, thus detracting from the otherwise equivocal treatment of the distinct lines; the one decorated became more prominent as it gained greater attenion and as it was often rhythmically different from the other part. Giovanni was also a noted performer as indicated by Gabrieli's "Canzona in echo" which was probably composed for him to play. (It is also thought that Bassano had an influence on Gabrieli's composition.) As a composer Bassano faired well with canzonets and motets. "Dic, Maria, nobis" was one of his more familiar compositions. ~ Keith Johnson
