Philippe de Vitry heralded the “ars nova” style of the late medieval period in a famous treatise he supposedly published around 1322. “Ars nova” literally means “new art”, and it saw great developments in secular music as well as a new rhythmic complexity and emphasis on expressiveness. The works definitely attributable to him make for a small but impressive oeuvre.
