Intimate, almost private in quality, Pavel Kolesnikov’s performances cast an entirely unexpected light on Chopin’s well-loved pieces. Decorative embellishments are no excuse here for mere virtuosic display, but appear like delicate tracery or lacework that add to the beauty of the melodic lines. There’s fire when needed, as in Nocturnes Nos 3 and 4, but ultimately this is about Chopin, as Kolesnikov selflessly gives these exquisite pieces the limelight.
