In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. As a kid in Trinidad, I’d slip out my bedroom window with a little blue AM radio and sit above the carport, listening to calypso at night. The rhythms grabbed me; the lyrics made me curious enough to ask Gwendolyn what I’d just heard. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Cypress Hill, Black Sunday Deep Forest, Deep Forest (Version 1992) Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin III (Remastered) I chose these three records because they changed what I thought music could be—and what I wanted to make. They made room for power, groove, atmosphere, and songs that become their own little worlds. They still echo through my songs. Tell us why you chose this song. “Our Tangled Tango” I love “Our Tangled Tango” for its guitar-and-piano conversation between shadow and light. It moves through tenderness, tension, and brief brightness, then fades into a dreamy place without quite resolving. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I brought my first album to K-Disc on Sunset Blvd. for what I thought would be a quick mastering drop-off. John Golden invited me back that night; hearing it become a vinyl record while we talked music and Hawaii stayed with me. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I’m working on two records that excite me: one built on humor, characters, and boom-bap grooves; the other turns earlier songs into a slower, dreamier world. Finishing both so they’re just right is high on my list.
