US recordings of Mahler's No. 8 remain a rarity, and this one from the Utah Symphony Orchestra—53 years after their first—is distinguished by the presence of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They make a terrific sound that has been stunningly captured. Thierry Fischer is not an emotive Mahlerian in the Bernstein mould, but one who takes a fairly straight approach. With fine soloists, some accomplished orchestral playing and, of course, that choir, this is an impressive achievement.
