美國當代作曲家 John Adams 是 20 世紀其中一位最重要的簡約音樂大師。跟大部分簡約作曲家不同的是，他的音樂不強調音符的微妙變化，反而呈現機械的聲響，且廣泛運用爵士樂、宗教音樂及民謠。John Adams 於 70 年代晚期譜出代表作《Short Ride in a Fast Machine》。1987 年的歌劇《Nixon in China》更成為他進入主流市場的突破之作。2003 年 John Adams 又以合唱交響曲《On the Transmigration of Souls》獲得普立茲獎。
