When Canterbury Cathedral broke with a 1400-year tradition and started a girls’ choir in 2014, few could have predicted that the group would be releasing their first Christmas album just three years on. It’s full of favourite carols wrapped up in lush orchestral and organ arrangements (“Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, “Silent Night”, “Away in a Manger” and “In the Bleak Midwinter” among them) and even throws in a few Christmas songs you’d probably not hear in a cathedral, such as “White Christmas”. Fresh, pure voices accompanied by lots of harps make this a delightful collection.
