François Francœur

Francouer composed vocal works primarily vocal pieces; this is probably because most of the positions which he maintained were associated with the opera. Violin sonatas and a symphonie were also part of his productive years of composition. He was playing violin for the opera at age 15, a member of the Musique de la Chambre du Roi, a member of The 24 Violons, Inspector Adjunct of the Opera, and director of the Opera. He and Rebel (a long-time colleague with whom he composed jointly as well) attempted to revive the opera from dismal financial straights, a fire, and a directionless retinue. The most that can be said of Francouer's compositions relates to their popularity, delight and currency. Pyrame et Thisbe and Tarsis et Zelie were among his operatic compositions.
