François Francœur
- Anima & Corpo, Gabriele Pro
Biography
Francouer composed vocal works primarily vocal pieces; this is probably because most of the positions which he maintained were associated with the opera. Violin sonatas and a symphonie were also part of his productive years of composition. He was playing violin for the opera at age 15, a member of the Musique de la Chambre du Roi, a member of The 24 Violons, Inspector Adjunct of the Opera, and director of the Opera. He and Rebel (a long-time colleague with whom he composed jointly as well) attempted to revive the opera from dismal financial straights, a fire, and a directionless retinue. The most that can be said of Francouer's compositions relates to their popularity, delight and currency. Pyrame et Thisbe and Tarsis et Zelie were among his operatic compositions. Francouer also composed for the ballet. ~ Keith Johnson
