François Roberday

Biography

Roberday served for a short time as an organist to Anne of Austria, Louis XIV's mother, and Queen Marie-Therese. His only extant works are contained in "Fugues, et caprices, a quatre parties." These are nine fugues, seven of which were followed by caprices. The works are highly derivative taking acknowledged themes from La Barre, Couperin, Cambert, D'Anglebert, Froberger, Bertali, Cavalli, and Ebner. Rhythmic variation coupled with strong counterpoint distinguishes these works. ~ Keith Johnson
