Biography
Johannes Ciconia (ca. 1335-1411) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Medieval period, sometimes classified under the term Ars subtilior, though his style reveals a mix of other influences. Little is known of his life, including his birth date and whether he was confused with others of the same name. Yet Ciconia was a composer of sacred and secular music and a cleric in the service of a cardinal in Rome and the court in Pavia. His output included madrigals, virelai, ballata, and mass movements, though much of his music was probably lost, and some pieces are considered misattributed.
