Jacob Druckman

Biography

Jacob Druckman (1928-1996) was an American modernist composer noted for an exceptional use of tone colors and stylistic references in his music. Early on, Druckman was a serialist, but he branched out into the field of electronic music and developed his strong interest in instrumental timbres by exploring taped sounds. Druckman was active in many genres, producing orchestral, chamber, and electronic music in a variety of styles in later years. He also adopted the practice of musical quotation, which figures prominently in his orchestral work, Prism, and many of his pieces have a theatrical quality, as in Animus III for clarinet and tape.
