Juliusz Zarębski

Biography

This Polish composer and pianist is considered to be one of the best if not the best Polish pianist at the end of the nineteenth century. Studying at the Vienna Conservatory he placed first in composition and in piano. In Rome, 1874, he studied for a year with Liszt quickly becoming the teacher's favorite pupil. Zarebski was appointed professor of piano at Brussels Conservatory in 1880 after he had toured most of Europe. Zarebski's most important composition was his Piano Quintet, opus 34 which included innovative harmonies, exciting rhythms, a facile combination of strings and piano, and the full extent of the piano keyboard. He was clearly influenced by Liszt and Chopin. ~ Keith Johnson
