Georg Böhm
Biography
Georg Böhm (1661-1733) was a German organist, composer, and one of the teachers of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in Ohrdurf, Böhm attended the University of Jena and spent some time in Hamburg before accepting his first and only organ post at Lüneberg in 1697, working there until his death. Böhm was particularly important in the development of the Chorale partita, a set of variations based on the melody of a chorale or hymn. Böhm's relationship to Bach was unclear until the discovery of a manuscript in 2004 that confirmed Bach as Böhm's student in Lüneberg in about the year 1700.
