Biography
Rosy Wertheim was a pianist, educator, and composer known for a distinctive musical voice that combined lyrical sensitivity with Impressionist and neoclassical influences. She trained at home in the Netherlands before spending years abroad in Paris, Vienna, and New York. She returned to the Netherlands in 1937, only to see her career curtailed by the German occupation a few years later. Across her career, she composed around 90 works, including chamber, vocal, choral, and orchestral music. She survived the war and later returned briefly to teaching at the Music School in Laren before her death in 1949 following a prolonged illness. Her works were featured on Rosy Wertheim's Wondrous Worlds (2025), with pianist Naoko Christ-Kato performing the Sonatina, the Variations on a Theme by César Franck, and several other pieces, many of which received their first recordings on the album.
