Biography
Pierne received many awards and distinctions at a very early age and after studying organ with Franck, succeeded him as organist of Ste Clotilde in 1890. He became a conductor for the Concerts Colonne in 1903 and was appointed principal conductor in 1910, a post he held until his retirement in 1934. He had a reputation as an impeccable musician, both as a composer and a conductor. His compositions are stylish and light, even when addressing subjects of a serious nature. He strove to express many shades of emotion in his work, utilizing clear textures and balance in his compositions. His work displays a synthesis of the varied characteristics common in the music of early 20th century France. ~ Lynn Vought
