Anthony Holborne

Biography

Antony Holborne (ca. 1545-1602) was an English composer of the Renaissance era whose early life is shrouded in mystery, yet his published output of around 150 pieces established him as a composer to be reckoned with. Holborne's music for consort included many popular dances of the time, such as pavanes, galliards, and allemandes, and some of his music was arranged for lute. Holborne's celebrity earned him a dedication on a song by John Dowland, as well as patronage from the Countess of Pembroke and the Earl of Salisbury. A posthumous description called him a "gentleman usher" to Queen Elizabeth I.
