Frédéric Duvernoy

Biography

The leading French horn player of his day, this teacher and composer was a favorite of Napoleon, appointed the first horn for the imperial chapel, and retained this position during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X. Duvernoy, distracted by the idea of two horn divisions -- cor alto, cor basse (alto horn and bass horn) -- made a third category the "cor mixte". He wrote a practical guide for playing the horn "Methode pour le cor". Compositions by Duvernoy included many solos for his instrument -- some with piano accompaniment -- concertos, double concertos, duets and trios. ~ Keith Johnson
