Biography
Sidney Corbett is an American composer based in Germany whose music is characterized by complex rhythmic pulsations that give a sense of breath and a linear tendency that involves sustained dissonance. His large output spans six operas, numerous orchestral works, and a large body of chamber and solo instrumental music. Corbett has a sustained interest in literary sources, exemplified in Yaël, a violin concerto inspired by the poetry and philosophical writings of Edmond Jabès. Sarah Plum recorded the piece on Music for a New Century (2015). His opera Das Große Heft (2013), a wartime tragedy based on a novel by Ágota Kristóf, reportedly left audiences stunned with emotion at its German premiere. Albums devoted to his music include a recording of the opera NOACH (2006) and the chamber music portrait The Longings (2014).
