Cinema’s greatest films are regularly elevated by their scores, the best of which have a place among music’s masterpieces. French violinist Renaud Capuçon’s stunning playing imbues 19 unforgettable movie themes with freshness and intense passion. John Williams’ theme from Schindler’s List has rarely sounded so profoundly moving, while Capuçon soars in a dazzling orchestration of Yann Tiersen’s “Suite” from Amélie. Aside from his breathtaking musicianship, Capuçon’s programme is fascinating: It’s wonderful simply to hear the music of John Barry, Nino Rota, Georges Delerue and Maurice Jarre on one album—and all of it played with such tenderness and sheer brilliance.
