美國當代作曲家約翰亞當斯 (John Adams) 是 20 世紀其中一位最重要的簡約音樂大師。跟大部分簡約作曲家不同的是，他的音樂不強調音符的微妙變化，反而呈現機械的聲響，且廣泛運用爵士樂、宗教音樂及民謠。約翰亞當斯於 70 年代晚期譜出代表作《Short Ride in a Fast Ma chine》。1987 年的歌劇《Nixon in China》更成為他進入主流市場的突破之作。2003 年約翰亞當斯又以合唱交響曲《On the Transmigrati on of Souls》獲得普立茲獎。
