Diomedes Cato

Well-Known Works

Biography

This Italian composer was a lute player resident to the King of Poland, Sigismund III. Cato's most important compositions were his lute pieces and include the forms of preludes, fantasies, and dances. The Polish dances are of special interest as they are based on familiar musical themes of the people. Most of the other structures are written within the bounds of the appropriate schema of Baroque music with parts parroting one another, in counterpoint to one another or written in canon. ~ Keith Johnson
