João de Sousa Carvalho

Portugese operatic composer and teacher. "La Nitteti" was the first libretto he scored and shortly thereafter he was appointed to the patriarchal seminary. Carvalho was the music teacher to the royal family having been a prolific composer. His fourteen operas were all staged and his sacred music demonstrated a facility for maintaining melodic lines even in quick meters. ~ Keith Johnson
