Biography
The genres of Gardane's printings primarily included vocal music for masses, madrigals (for which there was a great demand), motets, psalm settings and a bevy of chansons. Though much of his work was associated with printing Gradane's compositons were derived from the influences he found via the conventional composers of the time. His own chansons were arranged for two to eight voices. Throughout his career he aided the advance of musical printing by compiling type-sets for the full range of accidentals. He used Attaingnant's techniques -- printing both musical staves and notes simultaneously -- and employed the use of the oblong quarto format. ~ Keith Johnson
