The French cellist showcases the instrument's many personalities in this wide-ranging album that mixes well-known gems, such as Massenet’s “Méditation”, with the most gorgeous discoveries. Giovanni Sollima’s ‘“Violoncelles, Vibrez!” is an achingly beautiful, heartfelt work for cello duo and strings, while, in the transcription of Dvorak’s song “Lasst mich allein”, Capuçon allows his cello to soar in song. Capuçon is captivating in Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” and thrilling in Piazzolla’s “Le Grand Tango”, the album’s grand finale. But the vibrant highlight is Track Two—his pianist Jerome Ducros’ exuberant “Encore”, music of breathtaking virtuosity and red-blooded passion.
