Enrique Bátiz
Biography
After starting his career as a pianist, Enrique Bátiz founded the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México (Mexican State Symphony Orchestra). One of Latin America's most widely known conductors, Bátiz was active throughout Mexico and Europe and had a robust recording career. Bátiz was especially active in England, leading the London Symphony and London Philharmonic, among others. Bátiz was far less concerned with setting down a performance for the ages than documenting a performance of the moment, something fluid and evolving, caught in an aural snapshot. He remained the conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México until he retired in 2018. Bátiz died on March 30, 2025, at the age of 82.
