Biography
Joseph Guy Ropartz (1864-1955) was a French composer who started his career in the Romantic era and ended it in the Modern. An admirer of Franck and d'Indy in his early years, Ropartz came to absorb the innovations of Debussy and Stravinsky, though his pursuit of a livelihood outside Paris did nothing to boost his professional status. As an educator and composer living in Nancy and later Strasbourg, Ropartz was cut off from the most influential circles and only slowly won recognition. He composed in symphonic, orchestral, chamber, and choral genres, and wrote an opera, Le Pays.
