Biography

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. The first time that I realised that music could literally make your life better was when I was about 11, discovering Miles Davis' "Steamin'" record, with Coltrane, etc. - 1956. It was just the coolest thing and I felt different having listened to it. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Jan Garbarek, Jon Christensen, Keith Jarrett, Palle Danielsson, Belonging Radiohead, In Rainbows Steve Reich Ensemble, Steve Reich - The ECM Recordings I can't choose any particular Bach album, so as far as different influences go, these three (Reich, Jarrett and Radiohead) tick a lot of boxes. The Reich was chosen particularly for Music for 18 musicians, which I've been lucky enough to play Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Sunrising” This track condenses a lot of my musical influences. It's improvised, but with a framework in mind. It features an incredible acoustic instrument but morphed through analogue technology. And I always try to use virtuosity to serve the musical goal. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? As great as it is to play in large and important venues, often the experiences that stay with you are the tiny places with a locked-in audience. Obviously hard to pick one, but let's say I love playing in Basel, Vienna, Melbourne and Tokyo. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Of course! You have to keep growing, to keep searching for 'the thing'. And the goalposts shift often as well... I'll let you know when I have crossed off a few bucket list items, ok?
