„Elijah“, das gewaltige Oratorium Felix Mendelssohns von 1846, hat biblische Ausmaße und eine biblische Quelle. Inspiriert von den barocken Meistern Johann Sebastian Bach und Georg Friedrich Händel komponierte Mendelssohn das Werk im Auftrag des Triennial Music Festivals in Birmingham. Heraus kam ein Epos aus 42 Sätzen, das ein Orchester, einen Organisten, acht Gesangssolist:innen und einen großen Chor erfordert. In dieser gefeierten Aufnahme von 1997 sind die Superstars Bryn Terfel und Renée Fleming in den Rollen des Propheten und der Witwe zu hören.
