Louis Lane

Biography

Conductor Louis Lane, who had a long tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra, was known for steadfast precision, conducting from memory, and contributing deeply to the classical music culture of Northern Ohio. After studying composition and gaining the tutelage of George Szell, Lane excelled in leading orchestras through classic scores as well as new works by living American composers. The breadth of his work is represented by the box set titled Louis Lane Conducts the Cleveland Orchestra, released in 2024. It encompasses 14 albums made between 1958 and 1970 that are each guided by an original theme, such as On the Town and Pop Concert Latin America. Lane's prodigious discography also includes discs devoted to specific composers, including Copland (1982), Ned Rorem (1988), Respighi (1985), and many other albums of mixed works.
