Biography
Composer and sound artist Midori Hirano blends numerous textures and techniques, from acoustic instrumentation to field recordings and digital processing. A classically trained pianist, she eventually began exploring analog synthesizers and making experimental music. She incorporated glitchy beats and mournful strings into the dreamy soundscapes of her 2006 debut album, LushRush. This was followed by the acclaimed Klo:yuri in 2008. Hirano then concentrated on her MimiCof project, focusing on material with complex rhythms, and issued albums like RundSkipper (2011) and Moon Synch (2017). Later works under her own name, such as Minor Planet (2016) and Mirrors in Mirrors (2019), have largely excluded beats, and instead ventured closer to ambient and neo-classical music. Hirano has also composed film scores, and collaborated with artists such as Ytamo, CoH, and Brueder Selke. OTONOMA, an impressionistic mixture of modular synths and acoustic instruments, appeared in 2026.
