Biography
Hania Rani is a Polish composer, pianist, and vocalist whose music moves fluidly between classical minimalism, jazz, and electronica. Born in Gdańsk in 1990, she started piano at seven, trained classically at Warsaw’s Chopin University (with further study in Berlin), and now lives in London. Her 2019 debut Esja, released on Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Records after he heard her Reykjavik demos, earned five Fryderyk nominations in Poland; she has since won seven. Her 2026 work Non Fiction – Piano Concerto In Four Movements, recorded at Abbey Road with Manchester Collective and released on Decca, premiered at the Barbican alongside her ensemble piece Shining. She also tours as electronic alter-ego Chilling Bambino. Recent honors include the European Film Award for Best Composer (for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value) and Poland’s Silver Gloria Artis Medal. Her first opera, IF I DO NOT RETURN, premiered at Theater Basel in October 2026. Restless and genre-agnostic, Rani treats each project as a chance to reinvent her own vocabulary rather than repeat it.
