Biography
Kyohei Sorita first came to international attention winning the silver medal at the 2021 Chopin Competition in Warsaw—the first Japanese pianist to achieve this since Mitsuko Uchida’s win in 1970. Sorita’s international career gained momentum in 2023 with his lauded debut at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Born 1994 in Tokyo, Kyohei Sorita became known to a wider audience in 2012 when he won first prize, the audience prize and three other special prizes at the 81st Japanese Music Competition. He subsequently took advanced piano studies under Mikhail Voskresensky at the Moscow Conservatory, and then studied under Piotr Paleczny at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. After his win at the 2021 Chopin Competition, Sorita made acclaimed appearances first with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, then in 2025 made his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele in an all-Mozart programme with the Mozarteum Orchestra—the first Japanese musician to appear as both conductor and soloist with the Festspiele orchestra. Sorita founded the Japan National Orchestra in 2019, making their first international appearance at the Merano Festival in 2023. Sorita is also the founder of the NOVA Record label, on which he has recorded many albums, and the producer of the music salon “Solistiade” which fosters connections between young musicians and music lovers.
