Tyshawn Sorey

Biography

Tyshawn Sorey is a drummer, pianist, composer, and educator. A MacArthur Fellow and faculty member at Wesleyan, his work embodies everything from modernist jazz to vanguard classical. Sorey's 2017 landmark Verisimilitude erased genre divisions between contemporary classical composition and jazz improvisation. 2018's Pillars was an extended work for sextet. The Adornment of Time, with Marilyn Crispell, followed in 2019. In 2021, he released For George Lewis with Alarm Will Sound. He returned to post-bop with July 2022's Mesmerism, a piano trio standards program. In October he followed with The Off Off Broadway Guide to Synergism, a live, triple-disc set with his trio and saxophonist Greg Osby. June 2023 saw the release of Continuing with his trio. His 2026 work, Monochromatic Light (Afterlife), was commissioned to celebrate Houston's famed Rothko Chapel.
