Darius Klisys

Biography

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. My earliest musical memory is connected with the birbynė — a Lithuanian woodwind whose expressive, archaic voice opened for me a path between folk tradition, early music and contemporary sound. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Darius Klisys, Reversio, Gesualdo: Sacrae Cantiones Reversio, Lithuanian birbyne: XVII Century Music in Poland and Lithuania Various Artists, Liber Tabulatura: Music from The 17th Century Braunsberg - Oliva Organ Tablature I chose these albums because they reveal the Lithuanian birbynė as a refined and expressive woodwind instrument, capable of performing Renaissance and Baroque music with surprising naturalness.. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Hei mihi, Domine (Arr. for a Birbynes Quintet by Darius Klisys)” I love this piece because it brings together a quintet of birbynės, revealing the instrument as a rich and expressive ensemble voice. Its sound colours naturally echo early wind instruments such as the cornetto, recorder, Baroque oboe and chalumeau. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One of the most memorable moments in my career was founding Reversio in 2004. The ensemble’s idea — to perform early European music on traditional Lithuanian instruments — became our artistic signature and a new creative path for the birbynė. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? What remains on my artistic bucket list is to continue bringing the Lithuanian birbynė into new contexts — from early music and contemporary composition to international stages, high-quality recordings and immersive Dolby Atmos productions.
