Alfons Kontarsky

Alfons Kontarsky was a pianist whose career was closely associated with that of his elder brother, Aloys Kontarsky. Performing together as a piano duo, the brothers specialized in the repertoire for two pianos and piano four hands while also presenting works by contemporary composers. Their recorded legacy was documented in the 18-disc box set Alfons & Aloys Kontarsky: Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon (2026), which brought together their recordings for the label made between 1959 and 1983, along with several previously unreleased recordings. His career was characterized by sustained activity as both a performer and teacher, with a repertoire that encompassed works for piano duo from the Classical and Romantic traditions as well as contemporary music. Kontarsky died in 2010.
