Giorgio Gentili

Well-Known Works

Biography

Gentili was the "first violinist" in the ducal chapel of St Mark's, a position which he held from 1689 until 1731. He produced six compilations of printed instrumental music quite similar in structure and form to those of his contemporary Albinoni. The violin method for his works demanded greater facility and dexterity than those of Albinoni but the music itself can only be described as adequate. Attention is called to Gentili's use of the soli and tutti sections for the adagio movements in the trio sonatas. It may suggest double instrumentation. ~ Keith Johnson
