George Handford

Biography

Handford was an English composer with a connection to Cambridge. He himself wrote the preface to his 1609 collection of songs. He may well have lived in the same parish all of his life. "Ayres to be sunge to the Lute and Base Vyole" was the title of his collection and the songs were presented to Prince Henry. It passed through a variety of hands arriving at Cambridge. The songs contained therein are for chordal accompaniment including two duets. ~ Keith Johnson
