Biography
Conductor Clyde Mitchell, founder and music director of the Lions Gate Sinfonia in Vancouver, British Columbia, took up the baton after a successful career as a French horn player. He has been active in both his native U.S. and in Canada. Mitchell remained active as a hornist, becoming a member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra; while in Montreal, he taught and coached ensembles at McGill University. In 1999, he fulfilled a dream by founding an orchestra of his own, the Lions Gate Sinfonia. As of the early 2020s, he remained the group's music director. Mitchell made one recording with the Northwest Symphony in 2021 and one in 2023 with the Vancouver Contemporary Orchestra, both devoted to the music of composer Christopher Tyler Nickel.
