La Tempesta Orchestra

Biography

La Tempesta Orchestra has built a distinctive place in Finnish musical life through historically informed performance, festival collaborations, and projects ranging from Baroque repertory to rediscovered Finnish orchestral works. Founded in 1997 and based in Helsinki, La Tempesta Orchestra initially gathered musicians interested in period performance and chamber-orchestral repertory at a time when Finland's early music movement was gaining broader momentum. Alongside Baroque music, the ensemble pivoted toward the recovery of neglected Finnish concertante literature, solidified by its critically acclaimed 2021 release, Evening Dusk Serenade, which featured world-premiere recordings of previously unreleased works for violin and orchestra and Finnish Works for Violin and Orchestra (2026), which brought together Selim Palmgren's Concert Fantasy, Op. 104, Aarre Merikanto's Violin Concerto No. 4, Nils-Eric Fougstedt's Violin Concertino, and works by Väinö Raitio, Väinö Haapalainen, and Einar Englund, several in world premiere recordings.
