Gloria Coates

Biography

Gloria Coates, born in the U.S., was active for most of her career in Germany. She was a prolific composer who did much to promote American music in her adopted country, and she sometimes returned to the U.S. in later life as a lecturer. Coates married attorney Francis Coates in 1959. Coates established a German-American contemporary music series in Munich in 1973 and ran it until 1981. She was quite prolific, writing 16 symphonies, 11 string quartets, other orchestral works, and several song cycles. By the mid-2020s, some 45 of Coates' works had been recorded. She died in Munich on August 19, 2023.
