The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (CPPO) is one of the most prolific and versatile orchestras working in the recording industry today, renowned particularly for its extensive work in film, television and video game soundtrack recordings. After operating under various names in the years after World War II, the orchestra settled on its current moniker in the early 1990s. The political climate in what was then Czechoslovakia ran in its favour—after 1989’s Velvet Revolution, the country became more open to international collaboration. That led to the orchestra very quickly establishing itself as one of the major ensembles of choice for composers and producers. The CPPO, renowned for its adaptability, has worked with a number of high profile composers and has contributed to soundtracks spanning blockbuster franchises, independent films and television productions. Notable film soundtracks include those for Mulholland Drive (2001), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and The Lives of Others (2006). Beyond soundtrack work, the orchestra has also built a substantial discography of traditional classical repertoire, recording numerous albums from across the crossover and core classical repertoire.
