Darius Klišys is a pioneering Lithuanian birbynė player (birbynė or hornpipe is an original Lithuanian woodwind), early music performer, composer, and recording artist with 30 albums to his name (early, baroque, electroacoustic music). Tell us why you chose this song. “Hei mihi, Domine (Arr. for a Birbynes Quintet by Darius Klisys)” A quintet of birbynės plays in this work, the expressive and contrasting sounds of the birbynė are surprisingly similar to early wind instruments, such as the cornetto (zink), recorder, baroque oboe, and chalumeau. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? In 2004, I founded the ensemble REVERSIO. The idea behind the ensemble, to play early European music using original Lithuanian instruments became their mark of originality. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
