Biography
Franz Grundheber was one of the great German baritones of the postwar era, celebrated for breadth of repertoire, a brilliant voice, and an ability to bring anguished characters to life. His career spanned more than six decades and over 150 opera roles. He was especially famous for his interpretation of Wozzeck, for which he made celebrated recordings with the state operas of Vienna (1987) and Berlin (1994). Grundheber's earliest recording credits were on the operas Die Drei Pintos (1976), Don Giovanni (1979), and Werther (1979). In 2021, Naxos re-issued a live recording of Mathis der Maler at Theater an der Wien in which Grundheber performed the role of Riedinger.
