Mary Elizabeth Williams

Biography

Mary Elizabeth Williams is a soprano known for her dramatic intensity and flawless technical ability across a wide range of difficult repertoire, from Verdi and Puccini to Bellini and Wagner. She built her name in spinto roles in operas including those of Tosca, Aïda, and Leonora in Il Trovatore, before progressing to dramatic coloratura roles such as Abigaille in Nabucco, Lady Macbeth, and the technically very demanding Norma. Williams's earliest recording credit comes from a track on the 2004 collection of arias, ChantZang2004 featuring laureates of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. She has also been recorded as Serena in Porgy and Bess with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg and sung the lead role on a live, premiere recording of Edmond Dédé's Morgiane, released in 2025.
