Biography

Büsser studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1893. Upon his return to Paris, he launched his career as a conductor at the Théâtre du Château d'Eau and the Opéra-Comique. In 1938 he was elected to the Academy, occupying the seat of the composer Gounod. His most important works were for stage, composed in the French 19th-century tradition and sophisticated in orchestration and craftsmanship. His lyric drama Colomba (1921) was very successful at its première in Nice. ~ Lynn Vought
