Mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan has been active in her native Armenia, in France, and beyond, specializing in bel canto roles and in the role of Bizet's Carmen. She made her recording debut in 2021 with the operatic recital Rhapsody. Abrahamyan has also performed on the concert stage, often singing Verdi's Requiem and such works as the Wesendonck-Lieder of Wagner. In 2011, she appeared in the world premiere of Bruno Mantovani's opera Akhmatova at the Opéra Bastille, but she has otherwise not performed often in contemporary opera. Abrahamyan made a major step beyond her mostly French and Armenian reputation with a debut as Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the 2020-2021 season.
