Philipp von Steinaecker

Biography

After establishing himself as a cellist early in his career, Philipp von Steinaecker successfully transitioned to a growing role as a conductor. His repertoire is expansive with both modern and historical instrument ensembles ranging from the Baroque period with works by Purcell, Haydn, and Handel to the composers of the 20th century's Second Viennese School, with a considerable focus on Romantic-era greats such as Mahler and Bruckner. Steinaecker founded and continues to lead the period instrument orchestra Musica Saeculorum. He is also the artistic director of Balzano's Gustav Mahler Academy Orchestra, which he led in a recording of Mahler's Ninth Symphony on period instruments as part of the Academy's Originalklang-Project scheme.
