Joachim Raff

Biography

Joseph Joachim Raff (1822-1882) was a Swiss composer of the Romantic era whose music mostly fell into obscurity until the end of the 20th century, when it went through a modest revival. Assisted in his youth by Liszt, Raff rose to prominence as a composer, and his works in all major genres strongly appealed to audiences. He was also an admired educator, achieving the position of director of the Hoch Conservatory and teaching rising composers, such as Edward MacDowell. Yet the facility of his music has been criticized, and he is usually regarded as a minor composer, despite his enormous output.
