Claude Paul Taffanel

Biography

"Methode complete" (Complete Method) is the legacy left by Taffanel, and his associate Gaubert, for teaching the flute. In combination with compositions for wind instruments, the method, and the foundation of the Societe des Instruments a Vent, influenced music throughout Europe. Studying at the Paris Conservatoire under Dorus, who was the first to teach the Boehm flute in France, it is no surprise that Taffanel helped bring the Boehm flute to prominent use in France. An advocate of refined playing Taffanel may best be remembered for his malleable teaching methods. He catered to the individual needs of his students rather than succumbing to strictures of singular approaches. While playing the flute, the tones of Taffanel's efforts were pure and unpretentious. ~ Keith Johnson
